Conditions for reduced heat transfer following step-function heating of a wire in a large liquid nitrogen volume
This paper investigates conditions for the onset of a regime of decreased heat transfer following a step in heat input on the surface of a horizontal wire located in a large volume of liquid nitrogen. Two types of transition to decreased heat transfer are observed and explained: spontaneous boiling of liquid in the heated boundary layer and the merging of buddles in bubble boiling.
